What is a Certified Translation? What is a Statement of Truth?

In simple terms, a certified translation is one that has been completed by a professional translator. The translator then confirms that the translation is a ‘true and accurate’ copy of the original document by issuing a translation certificate. The certificate is known as a Statement of Truth or Certification Letter and is usually attached to the translation alongside a copy of the original document. The Statement of Truth must include the translator’s name, signature, and contact information. You can choose to receive your translated documents electronically and/or via the post.

Who Requests Certified Translations?

Institutions and authorities, such as the UK Home Office, request certified translations. This is because the Home Office and other institutions want to be able to rely on faithful translations, produced by independent and professional translators. Law firms, solicitors and wedding registrars also routinely request the certified translation of foreign documents.

Translation & Secretarial Services Ltd offers faithful and professional translations that comply with UK and international standards.

Who Can Certify Translations?

Many central European countries have adopted frameworks for the certification of translations. In contrast, no official requirements exist in the United Kingdom. For this reason, we always ask customers to check the target reader’s requirements.

However, it is common practice to use translators who are registered with either the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) or the Institute of Translation & Interpreting (ITI). These highly skilled and official translators offer proven experience. CIOL and ITI members are also independent professionals. This independence helps to reassure the target reader that the translation is a faithful copy of the original document. For this reason, T&S only works with fully accredited translators, helping to ensure that your legal and administrative tasks will be quickly accepted by UK authorities and beyond.

Stamped and Certified Translations

Stamping translations is not mandatory in the UK, where no formal regulations exist. That said, we know that many of our customers appreciate stamps. For this reason, we stamp our certified translations, whenever possible.

In contrast to the UK, some foreign countries formally require translations to stamped by official translators.
